What is a cover letter?
As the name suggests, a cover letter is a document that you send along with a larger, more in-depth piece of information as a way to introduce yourself.
There are a number of different cover letters that can be written, but the most common are as follows:
- Job Application – Generally sent along with your CV, the aim of the Job Application cover letter is to convey quickly that your skills and experience are suitable for the job you’re applying for and to encourage the reader to look at the more in-depth information in your CV.
- Sales Proposal – When writing to a potential sales prospect, it’s important your cover letter coveys a sense of warmth and professionalism while being persuasive enough to make the reader want to read through your comprehensive sales literature.
- Work Experience – This kind of cover letter needs to be slightly different to the traditional Job Application, as the applicant will not generally have a lot of suitable experience on their CV.
Whatever the reason for your letter, it’s important that your writing is accurate, clear and concise. Something that is poorly written and obviously hasn’t been read through can mean that your letter is thrown in the bin before the reader has reached the end, so take your time to do things right.

About Us
So who am I to be offering advice to you … and, perhaps more importantly, why should you even listen to anything that I have to say?
Well the short answer is because I like to think that I know what I’m talking about.
I’m a marketing manager for a fairly well known online company and over the years I’ve conducted hundreds of interviews and received literally thousands of CVs and cover letters.
Over that time, I’ve grown to develop a real frustration at the number of poorly constructed letters I receive … both inside and outside of work.
My colleagues actually find it hugely amusing that I have such an anal approach to good writing and correct grammar and were the first to suggest that I buy a domain and set up a website in my spare time.
So take this blog to be a way for me to vent my frustrations as well as trying to improve the quality of the average cover letter that gets written… I hope you find what is on the site to be useful, and even if it only serves to help a handful of people construct a good quality introductory letter, then I’ll consider the site most definitely worth it!
